Accreditation and Recognition Program

Accreditation and recognition through the Standards for Excellence Institute is available to any 501(c)(3) designated nonprofit in the US.

There are many benefits to going through the application process that go beyond the self-assessment. The independent third-party review of your organization's policies, procedures, and practices will give you confidence that your organization is committing the needed resources to your leadership, capacity, and infrastructure.

Some of the biggest benefits of Accreditation and Recognition are:
  • Strengthen your leadership
  • Engage your board of directors
  • Gain a deeper understanding of your organization
  • Prepare for transitions
  • Improve decision-making
  • Minimize risk
  • Strengthen evaluation
  • Facilitate fundraising and resource development
Organizations may choose one of two paths to excellence.
Full Application: Standards Accredited organizations submit to a three-stage independent review process that confirms they have demonstrated that they meet all benchmarks in the Standards for Excellence code. (LINK). This is the best option for organizations who already meet all or most of the benchmarks.

Tiered Application: Standards recognized organization submit to various levels of independent review (staff review, peer review, and a review by the National Ethics Standards Committee) to confirm that they have met some of the benchmarks in the Standards for Excellence code. This is the best option for organizations who may have more work to do or need more support from the Institute to meet all or most of the benchmarks. The levels of recognition are:
  • Standards Basics: The focus of the benchmarks in this tier is around legal and regulatory compliance. Applicants will undergo a staff review prior to recognition at the Basics tier.
  • Standards Basics Enhanced: These benchmarks focus on deepening and improving governance and management practices. Applicants will provide an updated application and undergo a staff review and a review by the national Ethics Standards Committee.
  • Standards Accredited: At the final tier, like with full accreditation, organizations must demonstrate that they meet all the benchmarks in the code. Applicants will provide an updated application and undergo a three-stage review process that includes a staff review, peer review, and a review by the national Ethics Standards Committee.
Application Guides and an Online application are available at this website.
